A false withdrawal order punishes Wagner's brigade

Wagner's brigade retreats under an order no one later claims, takes disproportionate losses, and then rejoins the climb when it sees the rest of the line advancing.

Notes

Amid the overlapping Union orders, Wagner's brigade received a command to withdraw from the captured rifle pits. Pulling back exposed it to Confederate fire and caused more casualties than other formations suffered. No one later accepted responsibility for sending the order. When Wagner saw that the rest of the divisions were still climbing, he sent his second line up Missionary Ridge and restored the brigade to the advance.
