The Swedish force at Vyborg Bay combined roughly twenty-two ships of the line, twelve frigates, and hundreds of archipelago craft carrying as many as 40,000 personnel. Gustav III controlled the archipelago force while Prince Charles handled the battle fleet under close royal observation, with the reliable Rudolf Cederström also present. A fireship and the leading warships opened a gap through a Russian squadron, accepting damage so the larger body could escape. Gustav was rowed through the fighting in a small boat and boarded another ship after it cleared the line, making his physical presence part of the command contrast. Preserving this fleet in being prevented a likely annihilation. It also created the force needed for the war's decisive follow-on battle only days later.
