The same family of extended-range ammunition associated with larger Italian guns was adapted to the 76.2 mm system. Suitably modified Super Rapid and Sovraponte mounts are described as able to use the ammunition from 2023. The combination of reach and volume lets a ship retain a nominal 120-round-per-minute weapon while carrying more ammunition than it could for a larger-caliber gun. The mount can therefore support close defense and sustained engagement at distances once associated with much heavier naval artillery.
