Voroshilov, the second Project 26 ship, served with the Black Sea Fleet and covered destroyers bombarding Constanța in June 1941. A mine damaged her that year, and she later fired 148 main-battery shells against Odessa. She also bombarded German troops during the siege of Sevastopol and supported the Kerch-Feodosia landing operation. Two Ju 88 bomb hits threatened the number-three magazine, but flooding from the second hit helped extinguish the nearby fire and saved the lightly protected cruiser. After three destroyers were lost to air attack in October 1943, Stalin required his permission before large warships could be deployed. Voroshilov eventually spent seven years in a postwar conversion to become a missile test ship.
