Retrofitting a swing-arm system is difficult because the ship needs below-deck magazines, handling rooms, and structural space designed from the outset. A magazine-fed launcher can be replenished at sea if auxiliaries carry and transfer the missiles. VLS offers much greater immediate volume, but once its cells are empty the ship must usually leave the operating area to reload. A mixed design might use reloadable launchers for routine engagements while reserving VLS cells for saturation attacks.

The endurance tradeoff between VLS and swing-arm launchers
VLS delivers a powerful salvo but is difficult to reload at sea, while magazine-fed swing-arm launchers trade peak output for sustained replenishment.
