VLS cell length as a fleet-design constraint

Vertical-launch cell dimensions explain why nominally similar missile ships can have very different weapon options.

Notes

Strike-length Mk 41 cells are 303 inches long, compared with 266 inches for tactical-length cells. Nominal cell length is not the same as usable missile length because the canister and exhaust allowance occupy part of the space. Early SM-2ER variants were too long for strike-length cells until the Block IV design reduced overall length to a little more than 21 feet. Type 26 and Constellation plans illustrate the options opened by strike-length cells, while older Canadian and NATO refits used tactical-length modules. Australia's Adelaide refits used still shorter self-defence cells, with the module raised above deck near the bow. Launcher geometry fixes important weapon choices long after a ship enters service.
