The Visby class is a distinctive and capable war-fighting asset. Its compact, stealth-oriented design has less room for meetings, hospitality, and other activities that make a port visit diplomatically useful. Sweden's move toward larger frigates reflects both NATO responsibilities and a desire for a more general-purpose naval tool. Sweden is also seeking a customized French FDI design rather than simply accepting an off-the-shelf ship, reflecting its own engineering and procurement standards. Visual impact alone does not create a full-spectrum diplomatic asset, and the larger ships must satisfy national expectations as well as add space.
