Visby is a stealth corvette intended to approach, strike, and disappear during sea-denial operations. Sweden planned six ships and completed five, each using combined diesel-and-gas propulsion for a speed of about 35 knots. The weapons fit described includes anti-ship missiles, a 57 mm gun, torpedoes, mines, anti-submarine rockets, and a helicopter deck. A planned 36-missile CAMM fit could let a Visby threaten aircraft from an unexpected position. During a convoy operation, the suggested tactic places it up-threat and some distance from the merchant ships, so incoming aircraft encounter a threat earlier than expected. Another warship would remain with the convoy to provide close protection and the staying power needed for local sea control.
