Dumanoir had been in command at Toulon when the senior admiral died. Napoleon judged him unsuitable for the permanent post and sent Villeneuve to replace him. Dumanoir wanted the command, whereas Villeneuve did not. Villeneuve's experience as one of the survivors of the Nile nevertheless counted in his favour.
