Viking beaching and Hakon IV's Orkney refuge

The Orkneys suited Viking seafaring because longships could be beached, repaired, and protected, later serving Hakon IV's expedition.

Notes

The islands served as maritime infrastructure long before modern naval bases. Beaches allowed crews to haul longships clear of storms and repair them, a practical advantage for vessels designed for mobility and maintenance. Orkney also belonged to a wider Norse network of island staging points that included the Faroe Islands. Hakon IV's long reign coincided with medieval Norway's greatest territorial reach and made the northern Scottish islands part of a wider maritime power system. In 1263 he assembled a fleet of at least 120 ships for the Scottish campaign, then returned after the fighting around Largs to Orkney and Scapa Flow, where illness ended his campaign.
