A-6 crews carried useful loads in weather that constrained other aircraft, operating both from carriers and Marine land bases at Chu Lai, Da Nang, and in Thailand. Their typical low-level profile placed them inside anti-aircraft and surface-to-air missile envelopes, and uneven experience increased the danger. Some aviators mastered extremely low flight, while others arrived too inexperienced for the threat environment. Fighter training received greater prestige and institutional focus than preparation for attack missions. Weapon proficiency often remained a squadron-level or system-specific responsibility, helping explain why a highly capable aircraft could still suffer heavily in its defining mission.
