Vido: the key to Corfu's harbour approaches

Vido controlled access to Corfu, but its roughly 500 defenders and five batteries occupied a position that lacked the main island's heavy fortifications.

Notes

Vido lay just off Corfu and controlled access to the water between the two islands. Its French defences initially consisted of about 500 troops and five artillery batteries. Venice had not developed it into a third major fortress, and the French retained that weakness. A heavily fortified Vido is proposed as a stronger defensive arrangement, although the reason Venice had not adopted it remains unexplained.
