The Victory class carries substantial anti-ship armament and missiles but very few fighters and, in the configuration discussed, no convincing close-in defense. Its later configuration loses the missile battery without curing the defensive weakness. An expensive capital ship should defend itself against small attackers or operate consistently with anti-fighter frigates and corvettes. Possessing escorts on paper is useless when doctrine does not keep them with the ship. Centerline or staggered turret placement could preserve a heavy broadside while freeing weight and space for defensive weapons.

Victory-class firepower cannot replace a defensive screen
The Victory class illustrates why capital-ship weapons, close-in defense, fighters, and escorts must be designed as one protective system.
