Why Victorious attacked Bismarck with Swordfish

A carrier-readiness answer shows how work-up status and an aircraft-ferry mission shaped the small air group available against Bismarck.

Question

If Albacore entered service early, why did HMS Victorious still use Swordfish during the Bismarck operation?

Short answer

Albacores belonged to Victorious's intended full air group, but the new carrier sailed before that group was ready and instead embarked nine Swordfish and six Fulmars while ferrying forty-eight crated Hurricanes to Malta.

Notes

Albacore availability did not mean every new carrier had a worked-up Albacore squadron ready to sail. Victorious's intended group included Albacores from 827 and 828 Squadrons, but the carrier joined the Bismarck operation before completing that organization. She therefore carried nine Swordfish and six Fulmars for combat. Forty-eight crated Hurricanes bound for Malta also occupied much of the ship, making this an air-group readiness and mission-loading problem instead of a simple aircraft preference.
