Victoria's forward armament and power demands

Victoria's concentrated forward armament and forced-draft figures connect an unusual battleship layout with the steep power cost of higher speed.

Notes

Victoria concentrated her main battery forward, with two 16.25-inch guns in one turret and a shielded 10-inch gun aft. The listed secondary armament included twelve 6-inch guns, twelve 6-pounders, and six 14-inch torpedo tubes. Her forward-heavy silhouette produced the nickname the Slipper, and Victoria with Sans Pareil became the Pair of Slippers. At about 11,200 tons, Victoria used triple-expansion engines to reach 16 knots under normal conditions and 17.3 knots under forced draft. Even that 1.3-knot gain required a large increase in indicated horsepower.
