Vertical lift changes Pearl Harbor and amphibious warfare

Even brief airborne warning at Pearl Harbor and precise troop delivery in amphibious operations produce major operational possibilities.

Notes

A patrol helicopter could turn a wholly unexpected strike at Pearl Harbor into an attack met by manned guns and launching fighters. Even seconds or a minute of warning changes the defenders' posture without requiring the patrol aircraft to defeat the incoming strike itself. For amphibious and commando operations, helicopters offer controlled pickup and delivery at chosen points during campaigns such as Norway. Formed infantry groups would arrive together, unlike paratroops dispersed across a drop zone or troops emerging from a glider's crash landing. Heavy weapons and vehicles would still need gliders or surface transport, leaving a precise infantry-lift capability short of a fully modern airmobile brigade.
