The Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire entered the war with very different sources of power. Venice was an economic maritime power whose trade and fleet mattered directly to its survival. The Ottoman Empire could marshal far greater land-war resources from a more integrated base, even though its navy was initially weaker. Severe losses at sea could disrupt Ottoman operations without exhausting its ability to continue the land campaign.
