British coal supplies during the Venezuela crisis

Overseas coal deliveries gave Britain a means of restraining German-American naval tensions.

Notes

German ships on foreign stations depended heavily on British-supplied coal in the early 1900s. In this account of the Venezuela crisis, Britain exploited coal deliveries to restrain German-American tensions. Supplies failed to arrive while the rivals were confrontational and resumed once they calmed down. British ships retained their own supplies. Fuel access could therefore exert diplomatic pressure without an engagement between the fleets.
