Vanguard could dominate Falklands shore targets

A surviving Vanguard could bombard Stanley airfield and create a wide naval-gunfire umbrella around San Carlos Bay.

Question

If Vanguard had remained in service for the Falklands War, would Vulcan attacks on Stanley airfield still have been necessary?

Short answer

Vanguard's 15-inch guns could put Stanley airfield out of action from offshore, while also providing heavy fire support around San Carlos Bay.

Notes

At 30 degrees elevation, Vanguard's guns are estimated to reach roughly 34 kilometres. In this counterfactual, positions off the eastern coast of the Falklands would bring Stanley airfield within range of her 15-inch shells. Her presence in San Carlos Bay would also provide heavy fire support across the surrounding area. A later follow-up applies that support to fighting around Mount Tumbledown. Shell resupply, the availability of ships to carry ammunition into San Carlos Bay, and gun refitting would constrain a sustained bombardment.
