A Cold War role for Vanguard in Norway

A Vanguard counterfactual explores helicopter conversion, shore bombardment, and NATO's northern flank.

Notes

HMS Vanguard might have remained useful after the Royal Navy stopped planning replacement fleet carriers. Removing an after turret for helicopter facilities would have required compensating weight to preserve trim, much as the Navy accepted added weight in other conversions. Her heavy guns could also have supported NATO operations in Norway, where amphibious forces would need artillery on a difficult northern flank. This explicitly counterfactual case ties an old capital ship's value to missions, conversion costs, and alliance geography.
