Would the CMV-22B Osprey be a useful future Royal Navy carrier aircraft?
Short answerIts range is attractive, but its logistics burden and limited commonality make a Merlin-centered air group more resilient for British needs.
NotesThe Osprey's range and lift are attractive, but its value depends on which Merlin missions it can replace and where it can operate across the task group. Some frigates and destroyers could not routinely support such a large tiltrotor. Adding a third airframe would divide finite hangar space, spare engines, rotor heads, manuals, tools, and specialist labor. Its size and noise also make an ASW conversion less attractive, especially when Merlins already serve carriers and escorts from a common logistics base.
