V-boats set the raid's force limit

USS Argonaut and USS Nautilus could deliver a long-range raiding force, but their available space limited Carlson to part of the battalion and command group.

Notes

Space aboard USS Argonaut and USS Nautilus limited the force to two of the Second Raider Battalion's six companies and roughly half its command group. Argonaut was V-4 and Nautilus V-6, both from the same construction batch. The V-boats were the US Navy's attempt to build large submarines with long-range reach. Their capacity determined the size and command structure of the force that reached Makin.
