USS Triton exposed the limits of submarine command posts

A proposal to convert the obsolete radar-picket submarine Triton foundered on space, accommodation, and the difficulty of embarking untrained national-command personnel.

Notes

The Navy also considered USS Triton for the afloat national-command mission after her radar-picket role became obsolete. Submergence promised protection, but it did not automatically make the submarine the better command platform. The command party needed space and accommodation, while many embarked officials would have no submarine training. The comparison with Northampton and Wright turns survivability into a systems problem involving people, habitability, and safe operation rather than concealment alone.
