In May 1915 Texas joined South Carolina, Louisiana, and Michigan in responding after the Holland America liner Ryndam collided with the Norwegian-flagged Joseph J. Cuneo. Together the battleships helped rescue 230 passengers, showing capital ships providing organized emergency capacity outside combat. In gratitude, the Holland America Line presented Texas with a model of a seventeenth-century warship. The model became part of the ship's wardroom history and was reportedly still aboard during the later museum period.
