Iwo Jima turned bombardment into on-call support

Texas spent three days preparing Iwo Jima and then shifted to on-call gunfire for Marines ashore until she had to leave for Okinawa.

Notes

Texas arrived off Iwo Jima three days before the amphibious assault and used that interval to bombard Japanese defenses. Once the Marines landed on 19 February, the battleship shifted from preparatory fire to responsive missions requested from ashore. She remained through 7 March, nearly to the end of the island's capture. Her departure reflected the demand for the same capability at Okinawa rather than the exhaustion of her usefulness at Iwo Jima.
