USS Pope and Clemson-class mass production

USS Pope shows how a simple destroyer design, many experienced yards, and enormous orders produced the ubiquitous four-stack Clemson class.

Notes

The US Navy planned 162 Clemsons and completed 156, spreading a straightforward design across navy yards and private builders. Their four 4-inch guns and twelve 21-inch torpedo tubes offered substantial armament in a ship that could be built repeatedly with accumulated industrial experience. Design simplicity let many yards use that experience instead of learning a highly specialized hull. Pope's later service at Balikpapan, Badung Strait, and the Java Sea connects that production story to the class's hard wartime use and losses.
