Carter served aboard USS Pomfret from December 1948 until February 1951 and advanced to lieutenant junior grade. Simulated war patrols off Japan and China supplied practical Pacific Fleet experience during the unsettled opening of the Cold War. Pomfret shifted to San Diego in 1950 and remained on the American west coast while Carter was aboard.
