USS Natchez joined the attack that sank U-879

Natchez combined routine escort and survivor-search duties with a coordinated depth-charge and Hedgehog attack that destroyed U-879.

Notes

USS Natchez spent much of her service escorting freighters and convoys. When a merchant ship was torpedoed, she also searched the loss area and recovered three survivors. Her anti-submarine work culminated in a coordinated action with other escorts against U-879. The group used depth charges and Hedgehog mortars to sink the German submarine. The episode shows how an escort could move from rescue and protection to an offensive hunt within the same operational system.
