Why the rotating turret outlived Monitor

Monitor's rotating turret offered a durable answer to the problem of directing a shrinking number of ever-heavier guns.

Notes

Monitor's lasting victory was conceptual: a rotating armoured turret let a ship direct heavy guns through wide arcs without distributing them along a broadside. As naval guns became larger and heavier, ships could carry fewer of them, making each weapon's usable arc more important. Designers first combined turrets with casemates instead of moving directly to one mature layout. That design line led through pre-dreadnoughts and ultimately dreadnoughts. Monitor mattered because its turret offered a durable solution even though its own hull was a specialised and flawed coastal design.
