USS Juneau and the five Sullivan brothers

Juneau's submarine loss during the Guadalcanal campaign killed all five Sullivan brothers and gave their family name to a later US destroyer.

Notes

USS Juneau was one of the two early Atlanta-class cruisers lost during the Guadalcanal campaign. A submarine, rather than an aircraft, delivered the fatal attack. The dead included the five Sullivan brothers: Joseph, Francis, Albert, Madison, and George. Their loss gave the name USS The Sullivans to a later American destroyer. Juneau's anti-aircraft armament offered no immunity to submarine attack.
