With warning from Headache and a line-abreast approach, the Tribals continued through the German torpedo attack without losing momentum in a turn. The encounter fragmented into close fights. Z32 slipped past the less experienced division built around Polish ships, Ashanti and Tartar destroyed ZH1 as she emerged from smoke, and the Canadian Tribals Haida and Huron drove Z24 and T24 toward a British minefield. The minefield damaged none of the German ships and halted the Canadian pursuit, showing how a defensive layer could also constrain its own side. When Z32 and the Canadian destroyers met again at about 2:30, each side initially mistook the other for friendly ships, but the Canadians became suspicious first and opened fire. The Tribals maintained radar contact through another retreat into the minefield, while Z32 mistook their gun flashes and silhouettes for those of Town-class cruisers. Renewed gunfire left Z32 burning, and her captain ran her aground at about 5:13 to save the crew. ZH1 and Z32 were lost, while Z24 and T24 returned damaged, removing the immediate destroyer threat to the invasion lanes.
