Ushakov's fleet training and aggressive tactics

Close action, concentrated fire and pursuit depended on a trained fleet, competent officers and a tactical reserve.

Notes

Ushakov favoured closing with the enemy without waiting to complete a formal fighting order. He sought to concentrate fire on flagships, kept a tactical reserve available, and pursued defeated opponents when that served the mission. In operations against land targets, he combined aimed artillery fire with manoeuvre. He demanded practical seamanship and gunnery training, including officers able to perform their sailors' work. His insistence on training gave the fleet the proficiency needed to carry out these tactics.
