Ushakov's imperial career in Soviet cinema

Mikhail Romm's 1953 Ushakov epic raises the question of how Soviet cinema chose naval heroes from Russia's imperial past.

Notes

Corfu's capture appears in Mikhail Romm's 1953 two-part epic about Ushakov, with the second film known in English as Ships Storm the Bastions or Attack from the Sea. The personal verdict is that it is watchable, although Hornblower is preferred. Ushakov's greater number of films compared with Nelson prompts a question about what different national cinemas choose to commemorate. One suggested explanation is that Soviet filmmakers sought imperial-era heroes whom communist audiences could admire.
