Payload and range make the S-55 useful

Engine growth, troop and stretcher capacity, speed, and range explain why the sturdy S-55 airframe could support several operational roles.

Notes

Successive versions raised engine power from about 600 to 750 horsepower without abandoning the sturdy basic design. A troop-carrying version could take ten troops or eight stretchers plus two crew, while anti-submarine arrangements added specialists in the rear cabin. Speeds above 100 mph and ranges stated as roughly 300 to 450 miles gave the aircraft practical reach. Dimensions and weights varied, yet maximum takeoff weight changed less than the proliferation of variants might suggest. These figures explain why the same airframe could be adapted for transport, medical evacuation, and anti-submarine work.
