Why were British Lend-Lease Corsairs discarded instead of simply returned?
Short answerUsed, lost, or destroyed equipment did not require ordinary repayment, and unwanted surviving aircraft could be disposed of rather than bought or shipped back.
NotesEquipment lost, consumed, or destroyed while fighting had already served the strategic purpose for which it was supplied. Britain did not want to purchase every surviving Corsair, and the United States did not necessarily want the aircraft shipped back. Combat use could therefore satisfy the obligation. Unwanted survivors created a disposal problem rather than an ordinary debt.
