Warship names carry historical reputations

US Navy naming traditions connect ships with people, but inherited names also force later generations to reassess the records of those honorees.

Notes

The US Navy names destroyers, frigates, and escorts for notable naval, Marine Corps, and civilian figures. The personal connection has appeal, though it can become awkward when an honoree's record no longer fits present-day standards. A shortage of uncontroversial presidents is no reason to stop building aircraft carriers because naming policy and force requirements are separate questions. Institutional tradition, public memory, and procurement can become entangled even when they pose different problems.
