US amphibious carriers occupy a supporting tier

American amphibious aviation ships perform work that other navies might assign to fleet carriers, while US nuclear supercarriers remain the capital-ship tier.

Notes

American carrier categories look unusual beside those of other navies. Tarawa-, Wasp-, and America-class amphibious ships provide the supporting aviation tier. In many other fleets, a full fleet carrier would be the national capital ship, but in the United States that status belongs to the nuclear supercarrier. A label must be read within the mission structure and force scale of the navy using it.
