Ursula commissioned in December 1938 and was the only survivor of the first three U-class boats. Her British service included the North Sea and Mediterranean, attacks on merchant ships, and the sinking of the Italian submarine chaser Togo. During an attack on the already torpedoed Leipzig, Ursula missed the cruiser but hit the escort F9. She was transferred to the Soviet Navy in 1944 and later sank submarine chaser UJ 1219. Her return to Britain and scrapping both followed in 1950. The transfer risked giving a prospective postwar enemy access to a boat arguably more advanced in some respects than those it obtained from Germany.
