How Ursula's crew helped create submarine watchkeeping clothing

Dissatisfaction with oilskins led Ursula's navigating officer to adapt motorcycling clothing into a practical submarine watchkeeping suit.

Notes

Ursula's crew disliked their conventional oilskins. The navigating officer, a keen motorcyclist, proposed adapting a one-piece waxed Barbour motorcycling suit. Splitting it into a jacket and trousers and adding a hood produced clothing that became standard for Royal Navy submarine watchkeepers. The officer later became chairman of Vickers-Armstrongs, and his diary is identified as a source for this episode.
