Changing building interiors exposes limits in familiar training grounds

An exercise-site recollection illustrates how familiar exteriors can conceal unfamiliar layouts and undermine assumptions built through repeated training.

Notes

Buildings of different ages can share a street while having very different wall thicknesses and internal arrangements. Old plans may be poor, and later alterations can make them less reliable. Clarke recalls a friend who changed the internal stud walls of an exercise building over a weekend while leaving its exterior unchanged. Troops returning on Monday performed much more slowly because the familiar building no longer had its familiar layout. The example shows how repeated practice in one unchanged training area can leave assumptions that unfamiliar buildings expose.
