The three torpedoes aimed at Nagato during the Kongō attack did not simply disappear when the battleship turned away. One continued into the destroyer Urakaze and hit the ship near a magazine. With little protection and limited subdivision around the vulnerable space, the destroyer exploded and was lost with all hands. The short case demonstrates how a successful evasive maneuver by a screened capital ship can transfer danger to its escorts.
