Upgradeability must be designed into the ship

Trace how the Type 31 adapts Denmark's Iver Huitfeldt design without StanFlex, then compare easy module replacement with tightly integrated systems.

Notes

StanFlex-style modules can be removed, updated in a factory, and exchanged during a dockyard visit with little structural work to the ship. The Danish Iver Huitfeldt class is the design basis for Type 31, while the Absalon class is a capable design for different reasons. Britain nevertheless chose not to carry StanFlex into Type 31. A deeply integrated system can be lighter and may allow a different or larger weapon load, but it is harder to change later. A modular standard makes upgrades easier while also committing the navy to the logic and interfaces of that standard. Upgradeability is therefore an architectural choice made long before the replacement equipment is known.
