The economic case for universal healthcare

An aside argues that universal healthcare can be defended through workforce security, health, and productivity as well as through left-wing social policy.

Notes

The British NHS provides an economic argument for universal healthcare alongside the familiar left-wing social case. When access is free at the point of service and funded through taxes, families can receive consistent care without fear of illness becoming a financial crisis. The argument connects that security to childbirth outcomes, treatment of illness, and workers who are less distracted or exhausted by taking multiple jobs to meet medical costs. In this account, healthier and happier people also form a more productive workforce. The same institution can therefore be defended through social and economic reasoning.
