How unit heritage creates a can-do culture

Squadron names and inherited reputations can make personnel feel responsible for matching the achievements of those who served before them.

Notes

Naval squadron identity resembles the attachment sailors feel toward named ships, and removing ship names can damage cohesion and morale. Calling Tribal destroyer groups 'Tribal flotillas' encouraged their crews to see themselves as an elite within an already proud destroyer arm. A historic squadron name works similarly by giving present personnel a standard inherited from those who served before them. That expectation can raise performance and reinforce collective responsibility, but 809's exceptional can-do reputation also made it easy for leaders to rely on the unit repeatedly. The same culture becomes dangerous when ingenuity conceals shortages that funding, equipment, and personnel cannot indefinitely overcome.
