Why Union cavalry struggled in the western theatre

Union cavalrymen in the west could be capable at small-unit level, but weak senior leadership limited their value in a theatre defined by movement.

Notes

The western theatre depended on manoeuvre, yet Union cavalry leadership there was weak. Individual troopers and junior officers could be excellent, including men recruited from horse country such as Kentucky. Performance deteriorated higher in the command structure, leaving regiments and larger formations poorly directed. Confederate cavalry in the west nevertheless caused the Union real trouble through raids and disruption.
