Undine: fighting after the loss of underwater detection

Undine's fourth war patrol ended after a leak and lost hydrophones left her unable to monitor German minesweepers before a damaging explosion.

Notes

Undine was launched in 1937, commissioned in 1938, and lost in January 1940 on her fourth war patrol. A leak had disabled detection equipment before German minesweepers attacked her on 7 January. Her unsuccessful attack on the leading minesweeper forced her to dive. At about 50 feet she had lost her hydrophones and could no longer follow events around her. After roughly five minutes without further attack, she raised her periscope to see what was happening and an explosion badly damaged her. The crew abandoned and scuttled the boat, with everyone getting off.
