Uncrewed vessels move from demonstrations to force packages

The plan sets out staged uncrewed deployments and mixed formations, with competitive procurement creating an additional systems-integration burden.

Notes

The uncrewed program is presented as a shift toward defined missions and repeatable fleet packages. Earlier efforts are criticized for producing technology demonstrations without settling how the craft would be used. Competition among suppliers can expand options, but differing platforms create logistical and command-and-control difficulties as well as systems-integration work. The plan describes medium and small uncrewed vessels deploying with carrier and expeditionary groups or operating independently. Within five years it envisages dozens of medium uncrewed vessels, with larger mixed formations including frigates within ten years and thousands of small and medium uncrewed surface vessels over fifteen to thirty years. These are staged planning ambitions.
