Uncrewed task groups face bandwidth and emission limits

Relay aircraft, laser links, satellites, and acoustic communication each constrain a mothership's control of remote vehicles, especially during emission silence.

Notes

A warship directing uncrewed vehicles must choose how to communicate with them. Suggested options include an uncrewed aircraft acting as a relay, laser links, and satellites. Each imposes limits, especially when the parent warship goes emission silent to hide its position. That requirement makes coordinating the remote vehicles difficult. NATO's Janus protocol sends digital information acoustically underwater, but its low data capacity and limited range illustrate the constraints on that alternative as well.
