Chapter · 10:51-14:33

Uncrewed losses create a new deterrence signal

The loss of an uncrewed system may carry little immediate political cost, while an optionally crewed platform turns crew presence into a crisis signal.

Notes

Major powers can lose or shoot down drones without treating the event as an automatic cause for war because no crew has been killed. This makes such platforms useful for presence and deterrence while also making their destruction politically easier to absorb. The ambiguity grows with optionally crewed systems, because announcing a crew may itself signal how seriously a state views a crisis. An opponent could claim that it thought the platform was empty, complicating responsibility for casualties. Reduced immediate human cost therefore does not eliminate escalation risk; it changes the signals each side must interpret.
