Uncertain origins and a career across Mediterranean courts

George's disputed birth date and moves from Antioch through Byzantine and Zirid service reveal the mobility of skilled medieval officials.

Notes

The surviving chronology does not fit neatly: the conventional birth date would make George implausibly young for some of his early posts. His reported career passes from Antioch after the Seljuk conquest to employment connected with the Byzantine court and later service as governor of Sousse under the Zirids. Comparing the claimed offices with plausible ages suggests a birth earlier than the usual circa 1080 date. The uncertainty illustrates the difficulty of reconstructing an eleventh- and twelfth-century career from inconsistent records.
